Oak Bay Youth Centre

The brief for this project was to envision and develop conceptual renderings for a Youth Centre space rooted in healing and community connection. The key challenge was translating deep philosophical concepts into a functional, uplifting design plan. The resulting concept needed to embody “genius loci”—the unique spirit and character of the site—by respectfully integrating local Coast Salish traditional design concepts and the surrounding West Coast nature. The primary goal was to map out a dynamic environment where young individuals could feel a profound sense of belonging, safety, and inspiration to foster healing and community.

Our design concept, which we termed “querencia” (a place where one feels strength and belonging), celebrates the process of adapting to chaos to reach harmony. This approach utilized biophilic design principles and a material palette inspired by the Pacific Ocean and coastal scenery. The renderings illustrate a visually dynamic space through upward-moving lines balanced by organic vertical surfaces for continuity and calm. Playful geometric flooring and cheerful custom seating define a vision that, once built, will serve the community as a welcoming, and healing sanctuary.
